When another company tells you your land can’t do something, it’s easy to take them at their word. This family had been told a pond couldn’t be built on their Stillwater property, that the soil simply wouldn’t hold water. For a lot of homeowners, that’s where the idea ends.
We came out, dug test holes, and found good clay right on site. Then we built them a half-acre pond averaging 11 feet deep, with fish habitat built in and a clay seal that holds.
The homeowners wanted a pond on their Stillwater property. Another company had already looked at the job and turned it down, telling them the soil wasn’t good for holding water. For a lot of people, that verdict is the end of the conversation.
Christopher came out to see for himself. Rather than taking the first company’s word for it, we dug test holes across the site to find out what the ground was actually made of. What we found was good clay, the exact material a pond needs to hold water. The project they had been told was impossible turned out to be doable.
Once the soil checked out, we moved into building the pond the right way, from clearing to final grade.
We started by taking down all the trees in the pond area to clear the footprint for the dig and give the equipment room to work.
We stripped the topsoil off the whole area and set it aside. Topsoil doesn't belong in a pond structure, so pulling it first gives you a clean base to build on.
We installed the dam in lifts, compacting each layer before adding the next. Building a dam in compacted lifts is what gives it the strength and density to hold back water without settling or failing down the road.
Throughout the build, Christopher used drone technology and laser leveling equipment to keep the work precise, checking grades and elevations so the finished pond sat exactly where it should.
With the pond and dam in place, we final graded the whole site so it drained correctly and left the property clean and finished.
As the dig went deeper, we hit water at 12 feet. On a pond build, reaching the water table can threaten the clay seal that keeps the pond holding water the way it should.
We backfilled with clay to reestablish the seal, using the same good clay the site had provided. That kept the pond watertight and protected the whole reason they wanted it built. The finished pond averages 11 feet deep, with fish habitat built in throughout.
